MCIRR's 2021-2022 Advocacy Priority
MCIRR's 2021 advocacy priority is working on Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol (BP) entanglement with State and local agencies by eliminating Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests and demands that other agencies detain people for immigration enforcement, and order an agency review of all ICE programs and practices that entangle state and local enforcement in federal immigration enforcement.
On March 25, 2021 - MCIRR member organization - The ACLU Of Michigan released their report: The Border's Long Shadow How Border Patrol Uses Racial Profiling and Local and State Police to Target and Instill Fear in Michigan's Immigrant Communities. The report shows how U.S. Border Patrol, an agency within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is engaging in racial profiling throughout the state of Michigan and uses state and local law enforcement agencies to target immigrants and other people of color.
Border Patrol is wrongfully using outdated regulations to claim authority to operate everywhere and anywhere in Michigan by measuring their 100-mile zone jurisdiction beginning at each of the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, even though it does not share a shoreline with Canada.

MCIRR strongly believes that people are entitled to feel safe and secure, to go to work, raise their kids and contribute to their communities without the constant threat that their local police will turn them over to Border Patrol for speaking Spanish or the color of our skin. #100MileZone
MCIRR will continue to work with the ACLU of Michigan to ensure that every is welcomed, respected, and treated with dignity.
